The essayist and craftsman Matthew Crawford notes that working with one's hands requires the ability to read not just instructions, but also the resistance of materials. A good set of chair plans will include a cutting list, a bill of materials, assembly diagrams, and orthographic projections (top, front, and side views). But the PDF cannot convey the feel of grain direction, the whisper of a sharp plane, or the patience required to sand a curved seat. The plan is the map, not the territory.
