Plot summary: Rizwan Khan, a Muslim man with Asperger’s syndrome, lives in Mumbai with his loving mother and later marries Mandira, a Hindu single mother. After the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 9/11–era rise in anti-Muslim sentiment, Rizwan is shocked when a racist comment from Mandira’s son leads to a public confrontation and Mandira tells him to stay away until he fixes his perceived “problem.” Determined to prove he is not a terrorist, Rizwan travels to the United States and embarks on a cross-country journey to meet the U.S. President and tell him, “My name is Khan, and I am not a terrorist.” Along the way he faces suspicion, hostility, and personal loss, but his sincerity and simple faith in humanity gradually change people’s hearts and bring reconciliation with Mandira.
