In 1949, Edward A. Murphy Jr., a engineer at Edwards Air Force Base in California, was working on a project to measure the acceleration of a rocket-powered sled. During the tests, a technician incorrectly wired a sensor, which led to a failed experiment. Murphy, who was monitoring the test, noted that "if there are multiple ways to do something, and one of those ways will result in disaster, then somebody will do it that way."
