  • “These Girls’ Fashion is Sick!”: An African City and the Geography of Sartorial Worldliness

As an urban feminist geographer with a research interest in African cities, I was initially pleased when the web series, An African City, debuted in 2014. The series was released on YouTube and also available online at www. anafricancity.tv. Within the first few weeks of its release, An African City had over one million views. Created by Nicole Amarteifio, a Ghanaian who grew up in London and the United States, An African City is offered as the African answer to Sex and the City, and as a counter-narrative to popular depictions of African women as poor, unfashionable, unsuccessful and uneducated. Enter "Tamilyogi." The inclusion of this specific keyword signifies a shift in the consumer's relationship with art. Tamilyogi, and platforms like it, represent the shadow library of the internet. For the diaspora or the economically disenfranchised, these sites are often the primary gateway to culture.

The film includes "Crazy" Mohan’s wordplay and comedy, making it rewatchable.

Avvai Shanmugi is a classic Tamil comedy that has aged remarkably well. It was inspired by the Hollywood movie Mrs. Doubtfire , but it successfully adapts the story to Indian cultural contexts, adding its own flavor of family sentiments and humor. It is a must-watch for any Tamil cinema fan.

Inspired by the American film Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), the story follows Pandian (), a struggling dance assistant who is recently divorced and denied visitation rights to his daughter. Desperate to be near her, Pandian undergoes a radical transformation with the help of a makeup artist friend (Nagesh).
