Al-Ya‘qubi was a resident of Baghdad who later traveled extensively, eventually settling in Egypt. His life spanned the late 9th century, a period of consolidation for the Abbasid Empire. Unlike his contemporary, al-Baladhuri (author of Futuh al-Buldan ), who focused on the wars of conquest, al-Ya‘qubi was interested in the product of those conquests: the land itself.
