He practiced obsessively, refining a technique that was already revolutionary: the "fourth interval" voicings (stacking fourths instead of thirds) and that devastatingly powerful left hand that sounded like a second bassist. By 1967, he was ready to answer his critics. He signed with Blue Note Records and walked into the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on April 21, 1967, with a stellar quartet.
