After the events of the second film, Marty is stuck in 1955. He discovers a letter from Doc, who was accidentally transported to 1885 by a lightning strike. Doc's letter says he is happy living as a blacksmith and warns Marty not to come for him. However, Marty and the 1955 Doc find Doc's 1885 gravestone, which reveals he was murdered by (Biff’s great-grandfather) just days after writing the letter.
