The most significant additions happen early on. In the theatrical cut, we get a brief glimpse of Hobbiton before the chaos ensues. In the Extended Edition, we are treated to the "Concerning Hobbits" introduction which fleshes out the political state of the Shire and the Green Dragon Inn scenes. We see the camaraderie between Merry and Pippin and the subtle tension in Frodo’s relationship with his fellow Hobbits.
